Solar activity reached moderate levels with an impulsive M1/Sf flare (R1-Minor) at 12/0018 UTC from Region 3141 (N15W27, Ekc/beta-gamma). The region also produced multiple C-class flares during the period. Over the past 24 hours, some spot decay was observed in the northern portion of the region. Region 3140 (N25W36, Dsi/beta-gamma) exhibited notable intermediate spot development and produced a C2.2 flare at 12/1642 UTC. Region 3145 (N27W22, Bxo/beta) also had minor spot development. New spots were observed in the NE portion of the disk. No Earth-directed CMEs were observed in available coronagraph imagery.
The solar kp index is unsettled, with retrograde effects slightly enhanced. The solar wind speed is currently above average, making retrograde effects moderately increased.
Solar wind parameters, as measured by the DSCOVR spacecraft, reflected enhancements in the IMF. Total field ranged from 2-13 nT while the Bz component varied between +10/-8 nT early in the period. After about 12/0700 UTC, Bz remained mostly north to 6 nT or less. Solar wind speeds exhibited a slow, consistent increase from ~400 km/s to ~475-500 km/s by the periods end. Phi angle was predominantly oriented in the negative sector.
There is a 20% chance of solar activity, with a 5% chance of a minor event, a 1% chance of a moderate event, and a 1% chance of a strong event.
